April 3, 2023 Subject: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED v4) Recycled Content ISO 14001 To Whom It May Concern: The U.S. Green Building Council has developed the LEED program rating system to define and measure “green buildings”. One component of the LEED rating system is Recycled Content of Materials and Resources. Steel is the most recycled material in the world and can be continually recycled into new products. In 2022, Cleveland- Cliffs’ operations recycled 6.5 million tons of scrap steel. Additionally, we recycled approximately 1,283,000 tons of material in 2022 that could otherwise be disposed of in a landfill. Cliffs Steel Inc. (“Cliffs”) has facilities using the BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace) process including Burns Harbor, Cleveland Works, Dearborn Works, Indiana Harbor, Middletown Works and Riverdale. These BOF operations, including recycling in iron-making operations, consume approximately 35% recycled content, of which approximately 82% is pre-consumer and 18% is post-consumer. Our Butler, Coatesville, Mansfield, and Steelton facilities use the EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) process. Cliffs ’ EAF facilities produce specialty steel grades and products. The products from these facilities contain approximately 85% recycled content with 78% pre-consumer/post-industrial and 22% post-consumer. Cliffs recognizes that all aspects of steelmaking, from the extraction and processing of the earth's mineral resources to the manufacture and finishing of steel, must be accomplished in a responsible manner that minimizes impacts on the environment. The Company believes that environmental stewardship is an essential element of a successful business strategy and subscribes to the tenets of sustainable development. Our steelmaking facilities’ environmental management systems are certified to ISO 14001.
